What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50. There are two types of AMD: Dry AMD and Wet AMD.

What are the symptoms of AMD?

AMD often begins without symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, common signs may include:

  • Blurred or fuzzy vision
  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces
  • A dark, empty area in the center of vision
  • Distortion of straight lines (they may appear wavy or crooked)

How is AMD diagnosed and treated?

At Grassi Retina, our specialist uses advanced imaging techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography to diagnose AMD. Treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of AMD, ranging from lifestyle changes and dietary supplements for Dry AMD to anti-VEGF injections for Wet AMD.
